down on the corner

July 29, 2008

(substitute Willie for Ahmed)

Early in the evening just about supper time

Over at the courthouse they’re startin’ to unwind

Four kids on the corner, tryin’ to bring you up

Willie picks a tune out and blows it on his harp

Chorus:

Down on the corner, out in the street

Willie and the poor boys are playin

bring a dirham tap your feet

This seen plays out all night every night down at the Jafary Restaurant. Non stop conversation and movement.  Move in move out, Cross the street, go back, hail a cab, send it away. All I could think of was CCR on the radio back in the day.

Rooster hits the washboard, and

people just got to smile

Blinky thumps the gut-bass and solos

for a while

Poorboy twangs the rhythm  out, on his

kalamazo

Willie goes into a dance and doubles on kazoo

Chorus

my view

July 28, 2008

No its not political just a view from my office. Today was a transition day from getting settled to getting on with life. AKA work. Crank it up! So this is a partial view out the window from L9, 901 Green Emirates Building. I have been passing around some info on the project and pictures. Will try and get some to this site. Not sure what the castle is but it looks cool.

Cheers

today’s advice and other news

July 27, 2008

I previously noted that John and helped me start up with technical advice. Not to out done with advice, Abby commented that all though the site is cool she cannot follow me. Thank you for the comment Abby, point taken.

So getting set up here takes time and patience. I thought Cayman was slow. Soon come here is “Insha’allah”. However today we got the A/C fixed in the living room and kitchen areas. A/C working properly is a must. I had basic cable, 40 channels of which 35ish are in Arabic. But there is more cable I was supposed have. It was not workng at all. Today they got it 1/2 working and the response was “so you wanted the upgrade”. Of course all of this was discussed when I moved in but soon forgotten. Soon come. Once I have the upgrade I should be able to access real news channels and a host of sports channels. Come on FOX! Getting about tired of the CNN/BO network. Plus movies.

Work is coming along. I will spare some of those details but busy working on PEP, schedule review etc. More later on work.

Today’s highlights: Found and went into a store called Spinney’s. Found Berroca! (Abby this mean I found the vitamins I like) If you have not tried Berroca you should. The hard part is they do not sell it in the US but you can order from Canada. Anyway Spinney’s looks like the place to shop. Smaller and it has a pharmacy. Plus a pork section! And Cuban cigars in the smoke shop! Berroca, bacon and Monte Cristo #4s. Life is good. And for good measure I found Granola.

Also went to the 19th floor gym and ran on a machine. Back to working out. The gym has about everything including saunas, pool, hot tub, all weights and machines.

Being that it is Sunday and we are in the future I get to watch the rest of the seniors british open in prime time. Off to do that now.

Keep those comments coming and more pics later.

Cheers!

and where I reside is…

July 25, 2008

here and next door and the image (what I see from L-room) and the hood. Oh well hope these show up ok. The building with the knob is across the way. That ball is where the cell phone genie resides. There are a few buildings with the same concept which was confusing because this building ball was my landmark for directions home. ( you can see my building image in the ball building)

and then I morphed to here

July 25, 2008

FIrst: Thanks to John for technical assistance at 3am or what ever time it was in Simpleville and I was just getting going in UAE AKA “in the future”.

  • New job Abu Dhabi UAE
  • Formula 1 Cafe (not NASCAR)
  • Secret job do not tell anyone
  • Requested for assignment on 7 July Expated 16 July on plane 17th
  • And went to Grand Cayman on the 8th for a couple of days
  • Arrive the 18th and thought I was good but crashed hard for 2 days but some how manage to make it to the mall. Understood if you were were here
  • On assignment right away. Met Client etc.
  • Got apt and car. Apt cool. Lack some basics but upscale. Clap your hands and someone comes to attention. But come only today,  services rendered tomorrow. (soon come in Caymaneze) Phone is Russian roulette. I may never figure it out. Skype is all good though.  Get some. I understand Vonage  no good. TV in Arabic. 220 power. Now that maybe good for Euros but living on 110 all this time… its not the power but the plugs. Internet is restricted.
  • So this week I have been trying to shop daily if not every hour or so to get stuff. Getting there. There are a lot of places to shop. Helps to have someone to show the way and I promise to return the favor when the time comes.
  • Driving is 10x worse than Boston.  Turn from all lanes. Speed limit is optional. But by goodness folks will skid to a stop at a red light. Worst offense apparently. But I have seen vehicles run a stop sign or two. At full speed. All I can say is driver beware.
  • Friday’s off. Weekend in a different place. But mall open on Friday. Ski slope is closed for now.
  • Lots of cultural differences. Womens dress is mostly covered. Abby could take a lesson here. But there are many expats so you see a bit of everything. Sometimes the normal surprises you.
  • What’s with the smoking? I though everyone was supposed to quit. American example not being followed. I am leaning that Americans allowed to smoke where ever. They do here. Coop is to blame.
  • And so it will take some time to get acclimated. Of by the way did I say it was hot!
  • Got some music going. That helps. Presently listening to Dream Theater’s Awake. “6 O’CLOCK ON A CHRISTMAS MORNING!”

Cheers

PS working on a picture link. But first I have to take some.
